Fife College are finalists in two categories at next week’s College Development Network (CDN) Awards 2019 in Glasgow.
The College has been shortlisted in the Employer Connections Award for The School for Health, Science and Technology while the College’s corporate parenting and care experience work has been shortlisted for the Inclusive College Award.
The winners are set to be announced at a black tie awards dinner at Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday (21 November).
Run in partnership between the College and NHS Lothian, The School for Health, Science and Technology (SHST) delivers training and education programmes in a real-world laboratory setting in a purpose-built training facility in St John’s Hospital, Livingston.
Courses available at the SHST include Modern Apprenticeships for a range of large national employers, as well as SMEs. The model of delivery, which can be tailored for each individual employers’ needs, has recently expanded beyond Life Sciences to train staff in Healthcare and Digital Skills from both within NHS Lothian and externally at the SHST.
The partnership has also been extended to establish a bespoke part time degree with The University of Edinburgh. The part time degree offers students the opportunity to learn in a hands on environment to create the life science workforce of tomorrow and address the current and future skills shortages in Scotland.
The College’s care experience work, which was recently showcased at the CDN’s Enhance the Student Experience event at City of Glasgow College, has been recognised for the support offered to care experienced students to help them reach their full potential.
Recent work has included the establishment of an Action Group and a Champions’ Group. These groups focus on safeguarding the wellbeing of our care experienced students, helping them with personal matters, funding or course issues.
There are over 50 members of College staff involved across both the Action and Champions’ groups. Dawn Clark, Chair of Corporate Parenting, highlighted how vital their work has been in attaining so much recognition: “Being shortlisted for a CDN Award is down to the hard work and support of many college staff members who have made a commitment to supporting our care experienced students.”
Other care experience work includes the ‘We Care at Fife College’ initiative. Dedicated to ensuring that our care experienced students receive sufficient support, encouragement and love, the initiative supports students through a varied range of activities and programmes which run across the College.
The Fife College Students’ Association (FCSA) was also one of the first associations in Scotland to introduce the role of Care Experienced Officer to ensure sure the voice and interests of our care experienced students are being promoted and shared in all areas of FCSA’s work.
