If your goal is to gain an HN or degree qualification in Engineering, but you don’t have the grades to enter at HNC level straight away, don’t worry! Completing one year of study on the brand new SWAP course delivered by Fife College could see you studying at degree level with an HNC or HND.

National Certificate: Mechanical Engineering (including SWAP Access to Engineering) has been carefully crafted by the expert staff at the College, in partnership with employer and stakeholder partners both locally and nationally, to not only allow you to progress to a higher level of study, but also to develop your practical and vocational skills and experience through hands-on learning.

This practical experience will be of great benefit as you progress on to study at HN and/or degree level in the field of Engineering.

What is a SWAP course?

Scottish Wider Access Programmes, also known as SWAP courses, are specially designed for adults who have few or no formal qualifications and who have been out of full-time education for at least three years (five years if you have Highers or an HN).

These courses provide an alternative route into Higher Education (that’s HNCs, HNDs, and degrees) and are designed to give adult learners intensive academic preparation, as well as the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence required to study at degree level.

Why go to college to gain an Engineering degree?

The great thing about studying an HNC at college is that it’s the same level as year 1 of a degree course at university. And an HND at college is the same as year 2 at university.
