COURSE INFORMATION

This course will introduce you on to the higher level aspects of electrical engineering. You will take part in significant practical activities which are underpinned by a strong theoretical content that will guide you towards a career in electrical engineering. The academic level of this course is the same as year 1 at university.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Electrical and Engineering principles
  • Hands skills
  • Problem solving
  • One year full-time – this can be done at either our Rosyth or Glenrothes Campuses. If you would like to study at Glenrothes, you should apply for Electrical Engineering HND: year 1 which is the equivalent of an HNC: Electrical Engineering course.
  • Two years day release
  • Infill by arrangement
  • Open learning
  • Distance learning
  • DC and AC principles
  • Electrical machine principles
  • Three phase systems
  • Electricity power systems
  • Electrical networks
  • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Electrical testing
  • Engineering Maths 1 and 2Communications practical skills
  • Combinational logic
  • Fundamentals of control systems
  • Graded Unit
One of the following:
  • Two Highers at Grade C or above, one of which must be Maths with the other coming from Physics or Engineering Science (Grade D will be considered for exceptional candidates).
  • Foundation Apprenticeship: Engineering SCQF Level 6.
  • National Certificate: Electrical Engineering SCQF Level 6.
  • Wind Turbine Maintenance (Technical Knowledge) SCQF Level 6.
  • Another relevant course at SCQF Level 6 (incorporating Maths: Tech 1 and 2) accompanied by a good academic reference recommending articulation to a higher level.
  • Relevant industry experience and/or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
  • HND: Electrical Engineering SCQF Level 8.
  • It is possible to progress on to a degree at university from this course - see our HE and Degree Pathways guide for more information.
You could enter a career as an engineer in the electrical engineering field, including:
  • Generation
  • Distribution
  • Research
  • Manufacture
  • Renewable energy
  • Other emerging technologies
  • Scientific calculator
  • Scaled ruler
  • Protractor
  • You may be required to take part in an informal conversation as part of the application process.
  • This group/individual conversation may be an information session, a portfolio discussion, or a skills based exercise.
