HNC Social Care

SCQF Level 7

This course is designed to meet the registration requirements to work in Social Care settings and is aimed at candidates who have had some work experience and are committed to working in the Care sector. This is a 12 credit award with most of the units applied to work experience and placements. For full-time students placements are arranged by College to ensure that they can be supported in the application of theory and gain experience to evidence competency in the three work based SVQ units integral to the course.

  • Social Policy and its Application to Social Services Provision
  • Social Care Theory and Practice
  • Psychology for Social Care Practice
  • Sociology for Social Care Practice
  • Graded Unit
  • 3 SVQ Units at Level 3
  • 2 Optional Units

Duration and Attendance

  • One Year Full-time
  • Two Years Part-time

Entry Requirements

One of the following:

  • 2 Highers
  • Full Group Award in Health and Social Care Higher, A-C pass in external exams
  • Evidence of some work or experience in the Care sector

Most placements have a minimum age requirement of 18 years.

Further Study

  • SVQ Care Level 3/4 in Health and Social Care (while working)
  • HND Additional Support Needs
  • Social Work degree programme at university (some universities will also ask for a Numeracy or Maths qualification).

Career Opportunities

  • Care related services, for example residential schools, day-care facilities for the older adult and resource centres for adults with physical disabilities or learning difficulties
  • Care Home Practitioner
  • Housing Support Worker

  • There will be a required interview even if you have the entry requirements
  • You will be required to join the PVG Scheme
  • There is a large commitment of time to a work placement
