Theatre production in the UK is currently undergoing an unprecedented period of growth with stage managers and theatre technicians in high demand. Theatre, events, festivals, and music industries, as well as the new National Theatre of Scotland, provide an ever-increasing variety of career options.

This practical, hands-on course offers the opportunity to continue your studies from National Certificate: Technical Theatre in all production areas and to work as first deputies then heads of department in stage management, lighting and sound, scenic art and construction on public performances in the College’s purpose-built theatre and other Fife theatre venues. In year 2 you will also undertake a professional industrial placement which forms the bridge between the college experience and the profession.

On successful completion of HND year 1, you will have achieved an HNC in Technical Theatre and Production Arts.

Year 1

Core units

  • Stage lighting: rigging, focusing and operation

Duration and Attendance

This course is offered as a one year HNC or two year HND:

  • HNC/HND year 1 – one year full-time
  • HND year 2 – one year full-time following successful completion of HND year 1

Entry Requirements

One of the following:

  • Two Highers at Level C or above including English or Drama plus three National 5s at Level C or above or equivalent (see our Qualifications Explained page for details), preferably with English and Maths
  • National Certificate: Technical Theatre
  • Relevant industry experience and/or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis


  • A successful interview – please bring relevant production paperwork

In addition, internal applicants will also require a positive Internal Learner Reference (ILR).
