Intermediate Certificate: Access to Computer Games, Web Development and Animation

SCQF Level 5

This exciting new course is an excellent opportunity for school winter leavers and returning learners to develop their skills in digital design, web and mobile apps creation, computer games and computer animation. It covers a broad range of skills for anyone wishing to pursue a career within the computing and digital industries and provides a pathway to further study at level 5 or 6 and above.

You will learn some of the underpinning computer technologies involved in developing digital content for computer gaming, computer animation and website and mobile apps.

Hands-on projects, tutorials and demonstrations will allow you to learn how to capture, manipulate and create a range of digital media elements such as computer graphics and computer animations. You will then create your own computer games using level editing software and learn the fundamentals of computer programming to create websites and mobile apps.

You will learn how to take your skills into the digital domain using software from industry giants such as Adobe, Autodesk, Unreal and Unity. You’ll also learn the basics of creating rich internet and mobile applications using HTML, CSS and jQuery.

Successful candidates will be well-placed for progression on to for further study and a career within this exciting and dynamic industry.

Entry Requirements

Whilst no formal entry conditions exist, successful applicants should be able to demonstrate a familiarity with computing, mathematics, art, and craft subjects and would likely have studied these at National 4 or National 5 Level or above. Communication at Level 4 is recommended as is a basic knowledge of computers.

Student Expenses

It will be useful to have a USB storage device with a minimum capacity of 1 terabyte (TB).

The purchase of some sketch books will be required over the period of the course.

Application Process

You will be expected to attend an interview with a member of the course team. If invited for interview, you should bring a reference with you. In the case of Fife school leavers, the College will request a Transition Form from the school. You should also bring a portfolio showing examples of previous artwork, digital designs or computer-based work.
