NQ Engineering Pre Apprenticeship SCQF Level 5

There is currently a shortage of engineers with practical skills and this course will give you the basic skills to progress into a range of engineering disciplines including the energy sector, both onshore and offshore renewables, the automotive sector and general engineering and manufacturing. The course is designed around project based learning and is designed to provide a fun and interesting learning environment with the course content linked to current and future engineering employers’ workforce skillsets and essential skills requirements.

The 11th Engineering and Technology Skills and Demand in Industry report produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) reports that the most sought after and most difficult to recruit roles in June 2016 included engineering which came in at number one.

This Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship course is ideal for students starting out in engineering as it provides practical hands-on training and focuses on improving broad-based practical skills and knowledge with a hands-on approach. Practical skills covered include assembly, fitting, engineering drawing using a project based learning model. You will gain SQA Engineering skills units, practical experience and case studies of real life situations and problems you could encounter in an engineering job role. The course is open to both school leavers and those looking to change or further their careers. It is also suitable as a refresher course for updating engineering skills and for those wanting to learn new skills.

You will learn how to work effectively and safely. In addition to the practical skills you will develop, you will also improve your employability through the enhancement of your communication, numeracy and information technology abilities.

The design principles of this course are to allow graduates to progress on to higher levels of engineering based and related courses and/or employment.

Duration and Attendance

18 weeks full-time from January.

Entry Requirements

Three Standard Grades at General Level or three Intermediate 1s or three National 4s in English, Maths and preferably Physics, or a qualification to this standard in a craft or technology subject in place of Physics.

If you are able to demonstrate a keen interest and aptitude for engineering and are willing and have the ability to develop your practical and hands-on engineering skills, you may also be considered.

Please note: you will be required to complete an aptitude test and successful interview.

Further Study

Subject to successful interview and completion of this course, you may progress to higher levels of study within engineering in the college or employment.

Career Opportunities

Completion of this course of study and further courses can provide a stepping stone and lead to modern apprenticeships or employment as a trainee in a wide range of engineering and technology enabled sectors. These progression and employment routes exist in the following industries, mechanical, electrical, electronic, aeronautical, marine, automotive, fabrication and welding, maintenance, manufacturing, energy and renewable technologies.

Many students will progress into employment in the engineering, renewables or energy sectors through our pre-apprenticeship course.
