I grew up in Fife, my Father was a bus driver and my mother a factory worker. My course at Kirkcaldy (known then as SCOTEC Diploma in Science and Technology) in some ways set a course for my entire career.
The two years I spent at College were wonderful - I had amazing lecturers (although to be honest I was completely dreadful at Mechanical Engineering).
After College I went on to study Divinity at the University of Glasgow but have worked most of my life in the field of science and public health.
I am thoroughly enjoying my career which includes being President of the Association of Directors of Public Health UK. I enjoy sharing my experience and knowledge with students which led me to become a visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire on a regular basis.
I was also delighted to recently hear I will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Hertfordshire later in 2022. My time at the College set the foundations for that, and I owe the College a great thanks.
My College days nurtured my enduring interest in science and gave me the foundations of scientific knowledge which has enabled me to do what I have done for the rest of my career.
My appreciation for what the College does, and my application of what I learned, is enduring and I am thrilled to be an alumnus of Fife College.
