Current Occupation: Estates Assistant at Fife College

Where Studied: Fife College

I have 16 years of experience as a manager at various levels for different companies and five years working in facilities and maintenance, so when I was asked if I would like to undertake the HNC Facilities Management course at Fife College, I thought it would be a good plan to bring the two experiences together in one qualification. One of the key benefits of taking on this course for me was that I was able to do this alongside my full-time job.

Having studied with Fife College previously for four years, I knew the standard of teaching would be at a level that industry looks for. The course provided me with a greater insight into the role of a facilities manager and has given me the confidence to apply for positions like this in the future.

I have learnt throughout my time in education to always ask questions and stay curious. My advice to students of today is there is no such thing as a silly question. It’s really useful also to read the SQA unit descriptors for your course as they provide a lot of information on reports you may have to write during your studies.

A great highlight of my career so far is being nominated for and awarded, the Fife College Innovative Use of Technology Award for my work on designing and building an app that Fife College Estates team now use to undertake their compliance checks. This reduces our carbon footprint as we no longer rely on paper copies as everything is now stored digitally, which not only helps the environment but also makes audits easier.

In the future I hope to return to the field of management and utilise all of my qualifications and experiences.
