"I was working full time when I decided to change my career, we had a baby on the way and I wanted a career in which I would enjoy. I’ve always had an interest in construction, my dad was a joiner and I’ve had other family members in the industry.
At first I wanted to learn a trade so started in NC Construction Skills, the modules were helpful in learning which trades I enjoyed and based on my test results the lecturers suggested I continue onto the NC Built Environment. During this course, I realised my admiration was for the Quantity Surveying module, which took me to studying my HNC to HND Quantity Surveying.
My favourite part of studying at Fife College would be the design project, getting the freedom to take a project from one aspect to the next. Coming up with your own idea and seeing its cost implications and potential revenue return was interesting. The courses involved at Fife College made the transition to university very easy, a lot of the subjects overlapped or provided a good base to increase my knowledge. Fellow students from college agreed that we were better prepared in the Quantity modules at university with the skills and techniques we gained from college.
Since completing my courses I went on to study at Heriot Watt University where I achieved an Honours Degree, at the same time I have been working for a contractor as a trainee quantity surveyor. My ambitions for the future is to become a RICS Charted Surveyor and work for a top cost consultant firm, with hopes of moving to another country once I reach this level."
