“Before starting my apprenticeship, I studied for two years at Fife College. I studied Construction Futures at level 4 first and that’s where I found that painting and decorating was what I wanted to do.
“I then did an NPA in Painting and Decorating. Once that was done, I started looking for an apprenticeship and the one with Kingdom looked to be the best for me.
“On a daily basis as an apprentice, I’m out on the job with a tradesman. But I’m almost at a level now where I’ll be able to go out myself.
“I’m working in empty houses at the moment; getting them ready for a new tenant to move in.
“I did my theory element at the College in blocks – but I’m finished with that now so I’m now on the job full-time.
“I’d love to see more females in construction – there were only two of us when I started college. I feel that the industry nowadays is far more open and accepting of females.
"I did struggle a little bit getting my foot in the door, but here at Kingdom I’m totally accepted and all of the tradesmen that I work with treat me like any other apprentice. I’d definitely recommend the industry for females.
“Once I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I plan to stay on with Kingdom Housing. They’ve been really great all the way through my apprenticeship and I find it’s a brilliant place to work. They’re so supportive and they give me everything I need.
“They’ve also given me the chance to do more training on top of my apprenticeship; extra courses like health and safety on-site and scaffolding courses. They’ve helped my development in any way they can and I’m happy here.
“I’d like to progress in my career, and initially I’d love to do that here.”
