My name is Lisa, I am 21 and I studied Level 6 Makeup Artistry and HND Year 1 Makeup Artistry.

I have had an interest in makeup as long as I can remember. My sister-in-law is a makeup artist and I would always look forward to birthday and Christmas presents from her to see if I would receive any makeup. I remember walking into Debenhams and looking at the Urban Decay Naked palettes, thinking I would never be lucky enough to own one.

In my sixth year of school, I decided that makeup was the career path I wanted to go down and I was going to pursue it. I wanted the very best education and to learn from industry experts so Fife College was the best route for me.

The course was definitely challenging but I learned so much and feel prepared for any work within the makeup industry that may present itself to me. The education you get in this course is second to none and so many opportunities came from it.

My favourite part of the course was the glam and fashion makeup in HND Year 1. I also had the chance to create my own makeup looks inspired by a makeup brand for my graded unit. This included three photoshoots entirely designed by myself and I got to work with models and a professional photographer. This experience grew my confidence and the final images were amazing, leaving me with an A on the project.

After completing my course, even having missed the last year, I felt prepared and I had a fire in my belly to grow my business and career as much as possible. I now have experience working on models, in theatre and also special effects knowledge to take into TV and film.

During and since completing the course, I have started my own business under the brand name Makeup By Lisa. I work in a salon in Dunfermline and I do freelance makeup as well as brow and lash services. I have since worked busy Saturdays, weddings, photoshoots and also done full Halloween days packed with clients. As well as this, I create makeup looks for my Instagram page and have worked with brands such as Benefit Cosmetics and ISO Clean, earning money online. Due to the pandemic, I have been unable to do makeup and makeup lessons so I started makeup masterclasses online so my clients can learn and have fun with makeup whilst staying safe at home.

I would highly recommend the makeup artistry courses to anyone who has an interest in starting makeup as a career. It gives you great experience and insight into the ins and outs of the business and you will learn about all areas in the industry that interests you. For me, it helped with my knowledge and confidence in makeup and the experience I gained in just two years set me up for life.

I intend to continue in the salon doing makeup, beauty and also teaching makeup. I am aiming to build my online presence to hopefully work with more brands in the future. My dream in this industry is to start my own makeup brand and come out with products I believe are lacking and products suitable for all styles of makeup.
