“Before starting at Fife College, I was working at KFC. I left that and applied for a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) with the University of Edinburgh. As part of that, I studied HNC: Applied Sciences and HND: Applied Sciences on a day release basis at the College.
“I found that the day release study method was really good for me. It really helped me to learn what I needed to learn to do the job here at the University, and also allowed me to take what I was learning at college and apply it in the workplace.
“I studied a multitude of different science-related subjects as part of my courses at the College. These included maths, biology, and chemistry. I also spent a lot of time in the labs doing experiments which was amazing. The facilities at the College were amazing. The practical aspect was what I enjoyed most.
“I’m now a Laboratory Technician at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Biological Sciences. I’m placed within the Edinburgh Genome Foundry, which is a robotic lab. Day to day, I help out around the lab and help to keep projects moving forward.
“My favourite bit of my job is being able to work with robots and getting to be hands-on with the science. I really love the science that underpins the work that I do here in the lab.
“For the future, I’m thinking about maybe going to university to complete my degree, or even completing a Level 4 apprenticeship. I’m keeping my options open!”
