My name is Stephen Watson, I am 23 years old and I studied HND Fashion Design and Production with Retail.
After I left school, I decided that I wasn’t going to university. When I weighed up my options, it came to fashion and design and once I had seen that Fife College deliver this course and what it included, it seemed most appropriate to study at college.
My favourite aspect is the design part of the course. We studied a unit in our first year which was called Fashion Commercial & Design, and in this we were designing a collection for a middle market retailer in the UK, exploring what this meant, market trends and designing for a target customer which was quite interesting.
I also really enjoyed the making aspect of the course; we did quite a lot of sewing which I really enjoyed.
This course has prepared me for Further Study because when I first started here, I didn’t know much about Fashion Design, and I didn’t know how to sew and I didn’t know how to do pattern cutting. But now I am going into a fashion design school and I’m going to be doing all of the things Fife College taught me how to.
I would recommend this course to anyone that may be unsure about this industry. It is a really good steppingstone to university, and I didn’t have to fully commit to doing a University course, I could stay local and do my second year of university at Fife College.
In the future I hope to complete my Fashion degree at Herriot Watt University and after that move abroad to Europe and work for a high-end fashion designer.
