This course offers you an opportunity to learn about the health and social care professions and the career paths are available in these areas. It allows you to begin your studies at SCQF Level 6 on a generic programme working towards Highers in care and psychology. The course is designed to support you to work towards university entrance over one or two years and is designed to offer the widest range of learning experiences to suit you.

Towards the end of Semester 1 (December), you will be assessed based on an agreed set of criteria (details given at interview) which will determine the most appropriate progression route. This route will be either:

  • Route A – Access to Nursing Degrees studying Higher Care, Higher Psychology and Communication 4/Literacy 1 (equivalent to Higher English for university entrance)
  • Route B – Access to Care HNCs studying Higher Care, Higher units in Psychology and the National Progression Award in Health and Social Care: Promoting Reablement, with placement experience
  • You can apply to university for nursing either straight from Route A or after completing an HNC on Route B
  • Care: values and principles
  • Care: human development and behaviour
  • Care: social influences
  • Counselling
  • Dementia
  • Reablement
  • Psychology (Higher units – Route B) or External Higher (Route A)
  • Placement experience – Route B
  • The Core Skills of ICT, numeracy and communication will be developed and certificated on this course
  • One year full-time

One of the following:

  • Four National 5s at Level A or B or equivalent (see our Qualifications Explained page for details) including English
  • National Certificate: Child, Health and Social Care (including a pass at A/B in the external Level 5 assessment)
  • Relevant industrial experience and/or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis


  • You will also require a PVG check through Disclosure Scotland in order to go out on the placement(s) as part of this course (visit for more information). In addition, internal applicants will also require a positive Internal Learner Reference (ILR).
