This course will give you an excellent grounding if your ambition is to work in the fitness industry, either as an instructor, personal trainer, or any other occupation focusing on physical activity or health and wellbeing.

This is an active course and would suit you if you have a keen interest in this area and already participate regularly in exercise.

Students who successfully complete this HNC course can register with the Chartered Institute for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and be granted with the professionally recognised Level 2 Gym Instructor award. 

We encourage you to become a student member of CIMSPA, it is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. One of its key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed national occupational standards. We encourage you to sign up as student member initially.

  • Working effectively and safely with clients
  • Exercise and fitness: health and safety management
  • Exercise physiology and anatomy
  • Exercise principles and programming
  • Health screening
  • Nutrition for fitness, health and exercise
  • Fitness, health and exercise Graded Unit 1
  • First Aid for sport and fitness

Key Optional Units

  • Plan, teach, and evaluate a group exercise with music session
  • Plan, teach, and evaluate a gym-based exercise session

External Candidates

One of the following:

  • Two Highers at Grade C or above
  • A sport and fitness related course at SCQF Level 6
  • Relevant industrial experience and/or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis


  • Evidence of active participation in Health and Fitness
  • You will also require a PVG check through Disclosure Scotland in order to go out on the placement(s) as part of this course

Internal Candidates

  • Advanced Certificate: Sport and Fitness (minimum of 13 assessed credits)

  • Fitness related kit is required to take part in practical activities, such as trainers, tracksuit bottoms, training tops, and shorts
  • You will be provided with a Fife College polo shirt, used for leading clients or client groups
