COURSE INFORMATION

Media content in all its varieties and forms influences how people think, how they behave and how society and culture change. From internal to external communications , corporate to social, successful businesses, organisations and creative entrepreneurs need to be using the right kind of media. This where you come in! Are you a Writer? Blogger? Vlogger? Podcaster? Do you have your own stories to tell, news to share, or opinions to discuss? Do you have ideas for scripts, story-boards, Film or Television. Secure a career pathway to work by becoming a capable creative media content creator. The HNC Media and Communication qualification is for those wishing to pursue a career in roles that are currently in demand and growing fast. You'll develop creative thinking, problem solving, communication and more through a broad range of media and communication roles. You could also consider moving to University after your HND. The course combines academic study and practical learning to reflect the demands of the media communication and other industries. 

This HNC will also enhance your employment prospects in the wider creative and communication economy. You can progress to the HND: Media and Communication at our Glenrothes campus.

This course gives you the creative media production skills to get your own or your employer’s messages to a wider audience effectively. Through small individual and collaborative projects in Podcasting, Radio, Film or Television you will work in groups and on your own in our extensive studio facilities (Radio, Film/Television, Podcasting, Sound Production, Photography) developing the following skills along the way

  • Digital Production Skills, including, Stills/ Film/Video Camera, Podcasting Production and Digital Media Editing
  • Graphic, Written and Oral Skills including Scripting
  • Design, Planning and Production Skills for Broadcast or Streaming
  • Social Media Production Skills 
  • Research Skills 
  • English Language Skills 
  • Media Legislation and Intellectual Property
  • One year full-time.

The HNC year at SCQF 7 is equivalent to 1st Year University and you could choose to leave with an HNC Certificate. We would encourage you to get a solid practical footing by continuing your hands on practical experience through the HND Year at SCQF 8 which is equivalent to Year 2 of University. The pathways to work and or University Year 3 begin with studying Complex Oral Presentation, Podcast Production, Video Production, Radio Production, Writing for the Media, Features and Trends in Media, English Language skills including correcting creative text, background and context of the industry through Creative industries: an Introduction, and staying safe and legal through Law and the Media and Research Skills. You'll be able to demonstrate excellence through the Media and Communication Graded Unit.

One of the following: 

  1. Foundation Apprenticeship: Creative and Digital Media SCQF Level 6 plus a National 5 at Grade C or above in English 
  2. One Higher at Grade C or above from English, Media Studies or Politics (or 1 Higher not including these with Nat 5 English at Grade C) 
  3. National Certificate: Creative Industries: Broadcast Media SCQF Level 6 
  4. National Certificate: Photography SCQF Level 6 

Adult returners with relevant industry experience and/or other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. 
 
PLUS: 

  • We'd love to see evidence of your passion for media content generation, e.g scripting/ writing, podcasting, You-tubing etc. A short show-reel or online portfolio would be an advantage
  • You may be required to take part in an informal conversation as part of the application process. This group/individual conversation may be an information session, a portfolio discussion, or a skills based exercise.
