COURSE INFORMATION

This course is for those interested in working in the community in a range of settings and with a range of individuals.


HNC Working with Communities is for you if you have an interest in working in the community education sector. This can range from private, statutory and voluntary organisations and with a range of individuals of different ages. You will study a range of topics from sociology, group work and working with asylum seekers. The course contains a work placement where you will gain practical experience and be able to apply the knowledge gained through the units of study. The course is assessed by continual assessment throughout the course.
  • You will learn the skills needed to work with a range of individuals in a range of community settings.
  • This is a part time course which will be 1 day per week over 2 academic years.

You will study a range of topics including: 


  • Social Science Approaches
  • Group Work
  • Working with Asylum Seekers
  • Working with Adults and Young People
  • 2 Highers at a grade C or above- 1 of which should be English. 
  • Successful achievement of a Level 6 programme in a Care discipline. 
  • Experience of community work will be considered as part of your application.
  • BA Community Learning and Development at Dundee University.
  • MA Learning in Communities at Edinburgh University.
  • This course can lead you to a career in Community Learning and Development in a range of settings, including youth work and adult education.
