This Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) aims to give you the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge to enter into a career in engineering and the advanced manufacturing sector, or other engineering related industries. The programme will equip you with the industry needed theory, practice and related work experience.

Undertaking a Foundation Apprenticeship at school widens your subject choice and helps you to keep options open for future study. Choosing this FA also supports you into gaining entry into an engineering apprenticeship which will meet industry’s need to train qualified engineers of the future which will benefit Fife and Scotland.

info pathway

  • The Foundation Apprenticeship is a new and innovative approach to apprenticeships and will better prepare you for the world of work by equipping you with experience and skills, as well as knowledge, you require for today’s changing labour market
  • With shortages in most engineering disciplines, both for highly qualified engineers and experienced technicians, there is an increasing reliance on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM skills)
  • Communication
  • Mathematics: Technician 1
  • Engineering: applying information technology
  • Graphical communications
  • Computer aided draughting (CAD)
  • Engineering systems
  • Engineering materials
  • Electrical and mechanical principles
  • Health and safety in engineering
  • This SCQF Level 6 Foundation Apprenticeship Engineering is open to S5 pupils only, where you must have successfully achieved three National 5 qualifications in Maths, English and Physics at Grade C or above
  • It’s also essential for full Foundation Apprenticeship achievement that during S5 or S6 you plan to and successfully undertake both Higher Maths and English, and achieve a minimum pass at Grade C or above in both these subjects. (If Higher Maths and English is not achieved in S5 or S6 then the full award Foundation Apprenticeship Engineering cannot be attained)
  • An experience of Graphical Communications or Technical Drawing would greatly ease transition into this programme
  • You may be required to take part in an informal conversation as part of the application process. This group/individual conversation may be an information session, a portfolio discussion, or a skills based exercise
  • FAs are accepted by colleges and universities as part of their entry requirements. For full details, check out
