Winning student Fay Rizo with Carol Hunter FCSA Student President for Education and Representation

Fife College student, Fay Rizo, has proved she has a flair for creative writing after coming first in a competition organised by Fife College Students’ Association (FCSA) to raise awareness of Mental Health issues.

The competition was rolled out to students as part of a Mental Health Awareness week held earlier in the year - the competition theme was ‘Turning Point’ where students were asked to write about and focus on a positive time for them when everything changed for the better.

Fay, 17 from Dunfermline, is currently studying HNC Social Sciences and was delighted to hear she had been chosen as the winner.

Said Fay: “Having previously lived in Greece and England I am now settled in Scotland. My piece was about a girl who wasn’t happy and which described her emotions growing up which I could relate to. I was delighted to hear I was the winner – I was in Greece on holiday at the time and I danced around the room when I read the email."

Carol Hunter, FCSA President for Education and Representation, organised the competition and was delighted that Scottish author, Jenni Fagan, was personally able to judge the shortlisted entries and to decide on a winner.

Said Carol: “We wanted this competition to help highlight issues that our students face and celebrate our differences and talents. Jenni is a fabulous Scottish author, who like myself, is care experienced and uses her own experiences and past difficulties to reflect and create positive outcomes within her writing. I felt that these attributes and Jenni’s style of writing made her the ideal choice to judge our competition. Fay did really well and I was delighted to present her with her winning prize.”

Said Jenni: “Fay’s entry was well written with a flair for risk taking - there is a great honesty to it as well. I am very happy to support it as the winning entry.”
