HND Sports Coaching and Development SCQF Level 8

This HND Year 2 follows on from the HNC year and it gives learners the knowledge and skills necessary to work as professionals within the sector. The topics include Coaching Theory and Practice, Sports Development, Anatomy & Biomechanics, and Professional Practice (Including research skills). This HND includes an embedded, industry recognised Professional Development Award in Sports Coaching that is jointly certified by Sportscotland CIMSPA.CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. One of its key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed national occupational standards. What skills will I learn?

The topics covered range from human anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to sports coaching, sports development and professional practice — including research skills.
The course will also offer opportunities to develop Essential skills including Problem Solving, Working with others, Communication, and ICT skills some of which are accredited as part of the programme.

What will I study?

This course combines elements of theory with practical application. It is ideal for those with wish to develop a deeper understanding of the sector and the wide variety of career paths available.. It is expected that candidates will undertake placements in a community setting utilising a range of client groups including children, and disability. This provides opportunities for candidates to engage in a workplace environment and gain relevant industry experience to prepare them for employment. The course is assessed in a holistic approach utilising a variety of assessment methodologies including practical observations, portfolios, and group work.

This course has excellent articulation arrangements with 4 Partner Universities enabling access to Degree Level study on successful completion of this course.

What career opportunities are there?

Successful completion of the HND may lead to career opportunities which include sports coaching and/ or activity leadership, active school roles, sports development, disability sports development, fitness/gym staff, leisure centre staff, swimming pool staff, and health and fitness staff. Employers may include: local authorities, leisure trusts, national/sports governing bodies (NGB/ SGB), local sports organisations, and private clubs/ hotels. The PDAs from HNC & HND are mapped to the Sportscotland Effective Coaching Map. It is recognised by Community Leisure UK (Scotland) as a qualification that will meet their workforce needs and therefore represents a passport to employment
