Fife College HND Media and Communication students enjoyed an incredible opportunity to work with the BBC this year, culminating in a screening of their own short films at BBC Scotland’s studios in Glasgow and their videos being showcased on ‘The Social’ - the BBC’s online platform which showcases new creative talent.

The students took part in a nationwide project called Social Connects: an innovative digital media production training module that is delivered in partnership with nine UK colleges, with content focused on the skills and knowledge required to work in the media industry.

Working in teams, the students used official BBC training, delivered by Fife College lecturers, with additional support provided through online masterclasses and mentoring from BBC staff, to develop original short films about their local area. The students then pitched their ideas directly to BBC professionals, receiving valuable industry feedback throughout the production process. Three of the films were selected to feature on the BBC’s social media platforms alongside entries from other participating colleges.

To celebrate their achievement, students Stephanie Douglas, Emma Morton, Jude Black, Rowan Davidson, Jordan Harvey and Ryan Chapman were invited to BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay studios for an exclusive screening day. The visit included a behind-the-scenes tour of the studio facilities that are used for live news, TV drama, and music performances.

Earlier in the year, BBC staff also visited Fife College’s Glenrothes Campus to see the college’s industry-standard TV, radio, and podcasting studios, commending the facilities and the standard of student work being produced.

Mark Boyd, Lecturer for Creative Industries - Broadcast Media and Screen, who led the project alongside colleague Scott Hastie, praised the students’ efforts:

“We were incredibly proud to see the standard of work our students achieved. The experience of collaborating with the BBC has given them invaluable skills and insights that will support their future careers in the media industry.”

Student Stephanie Douglas reflected on the experience, saying:

“It was an amazing day. The feedback we received was so helpful and positive, and everyone at BBC Scotland was so generous with their time. It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Fellow student Jude Black added:

“It was a super interesting insight into what actually goes on at the BBC - really motivating!”
