From Student to Life-long Learner: David’s Journey
David’s journey with Fife College began in 2002, studying National Certificates, Higher National Certificates, and Higher National Diplomas in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Electronic Product Manufacture. He also completed a BSc in Engineering, awarded through Abertay University as part of a College/University link-up, building a strong foundation for his career.
Alongside his studies, David completed the first year of a modern apprenticeship at Mitchelston Industrial Estate, combining practical experience with college-based theory classes at the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), part of Adam Smith College, located on Dunnikier Way.
David recalls that what he enjoyed most about college was the focus and dedication of his fellow students. “Everyone in the class wanted to learn and were fully focused on getting their career off the ground,” he explains. A particularly special memory was receiving the College Award for Best Electronic Student in 2006, presented by Jim Leishman at a College dinner, an occasion shared with his proud parents.
Fife College had a profound impact on David’s life. “I went from not really liking school to being a life-long learner,” he says. Since leaving, he has completed an MSc and an MBA, and his career has steadily progressed to his current role as EC&I Maintenance Superintendent at The Oil & Pipelines Agency.
David thoroughly enjoys the ongoing learning in his career, and he takes great pride in mentoring apprentices. “It seems like no time ago I was the apprentice. They are important for the future,” he notes.
David encourages current and future students to embrace learning as: “Nothing is beyond you if you have the right attitude and apply yourself.”
Reflecting on his journey, David also highlights how apprenticeships can make a real difference, sharing his feature in Skills Development Scotland for those interested in similar pathways: The Value of Apprenticeships.
From his early studies to his ongoing career and academic achievements, David’s story is a testament to the life-changing opportunities Fife College offers, inspiring students to dream big and keep learning.
