My name is Fiona McLeod, and I work at Fife College as a lecturer in events, hospitality, and a bit of tourism as well. I came to work at Fife College about 20 years ago when a good friend of mine who also works at Fife College introduced me to the lecturers here. I really enjoyed the environment and what people were doing. I came along as a student and I loved it that much, I ended up getting a job 12 hours part-time when my kids were younger, and I have been here ever since. I enjoy all the different things we do.
We always organise external events. We have a lot of time in The Academy with night classes on a Thursday evening. We are working hard with the chef students, creating a great and realistic work environment. This demonstrates to the students what it is like to work in the industry. They can expect a lot of fun and new knowledge in the classes.
As well as being classroom based, we are always out and about to events. The students and I were at a conference last week; we were at the Scottish Parliament buildings last year doing a pop-up dinner; we had a big food festival in March. Students are really involved with external events that are all great experience for what the industry is looking for.
The best thing working at Fife College is getting to meet new people all the time as I am such a people person. I enjoy talking, networking and watching the students grow. It is so nice to meet them at the start and watch their journey over the years; albeit three years or one. It is great fun and amazing to see what they achieve.
