A total of 143 Fife College students have been awarded Russell Trust Scholarships to support their studies and future careers.
With a total fund of £15,000, the awards from The Russell Trust provide valuable financial assistance to help students purchase essential equipment, learning materials and resources for their educational journey.
To celebrate the students’ achievements, a special presentation event was held at the Carnegie Conference and Events Centre at the College’s new Dunfermline City Campus, where 45 award recipients attended and received certificates from Alice Croal of the Russell Trust. Cecilia Russell, also from the Russell Trust, spoke of the background to the original fund, which was founded in memory of Captain Pat Russell, who was sadly killed in the Second World War.
Guests at the event also included family and friends of the award winners, Fife College Principal Jim Metcalfe, staff and Board members. All enjoyed hearing from guest speaker Jennifer McLuckie, a previous Russell Trust Scholarship recipient, who shared her experiences to inspire the latest group of scholarship winners.
The Russell Trust Scholarship is one of the most significant awards offered through the Adam Smith Scholarships programme at Fife College. First introduced in 1999, it remains one of the College’s longest-standing scholarships. Since its inception, 1,521 students have benefited from the fund, with more than £242,500 awarded to support learners across Fife.
One of this year’s delighted recipients was Hospitality and Events student Callum Thomson. Callum, from Kirkcaldy, said:
“I’m very happy about being successful in this scholarship. It will help me get started with my driving lessons, and that will really help with travel and open up more job opportunities.”
Another winner was Advanced Beauty Techniques student Shannon Simpson, from Dunfermline. She said:
“Winning this scholarship makes me feel proud and grateful. It recognises the hard work I’ve put into my course and motivates me to keep pushing myself.
“I will use this to buy professional products and equipment to support my practical work and help me continue developing my skills for my future career.”
Cecilia Russell, Trustee of the Russell Trust, said:
“We are delighted to be able to support the students of Fife College through the Russell Trust scholarships, and we extend our warmest congratulations to this year’s recipients.
“Sir David Russell, the founder of the Russell Trust, was a passionate advocate for advancing education among young people in Fife. More than 70 years on, it’s incredibly rewarding to continue that mission through this scholarship.”
Lyn Gold, Scholarship and Alumni Engagement Lead at Fife College, said:
"The Russell Trust Scholarship is incredibly special to us at Fife College. For more than two decades, these scholarships have made a real difference to our students, giving them the financial support and confidence to continue their studies and achieve their ambitions.
"We are extremely grateful for their continued generosity and commitment to supporting education in Fife. Congratulations to all of this year’s scholarship recipients on their well-deserved success."
