Fife College has secured funding through the Summer of Sport Programme to deliver an exciting new Street Games Festival, creating fun, free, accessible opportunities for children, young people and families to get active.
The funding forms part of a significant investment by sportscotland and the Scottish Government to help communities celebrate an incredible Summer of Sport, which includes the FIFA World Cup and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Secured through Scottish Student Sport (SSS), the funding supports colleges and universities across Scotland to deliver projects that will encourage students and communities to stay active throughout the summer and into the new academic year.
Hosted at Fife College's Dunfermline City Campus later this year, the Street Games Festival will offer families a free introduction to a range of informal activities including disc golf, foot golf, swing ball, hopscotch and kirby with the aim of engaging children and young people who currently may not take part in traditional sport.
While the festival promises a fun-filled day for families, it also marks the beginning of a project with lasting impact that builds on this year’s Summer of Sport. Activities showcased during the festival will be developed into a sustainable Street Games package that Fife College students will be trained to deliver to local schools and community groups.
Students will gain practical coaching experience while helping more children and young people discover simple, affordable, and enjoyable pathways into long-term physical activity, particularly in rural communities and areas where access to traditional sports facilities may be limited.
Kathy McVicar, Head of School - Care, Health, Science & Wellbeing at Fife College said:
"We're thrilled and proud that Fife College has secured funding to deliver this exciting initiative as part of the Summer of Sport. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to highlight the positive contribution colleges can play in supporting healthier communities while giving the next generation of physical exercise leaders valuable real-world coaching experience.
“The benefits of this project will be wide-reaching. It will help us build relationships in the local community, offer exposure for local clubs aiding the delivery of the activities, and provide networking opportunities for our students…Definitely a win-win for all involved!”
Further details about the Street Games Festival, including the event date, will be announced in the coming months.
