Fife College has once again been recognised for its efforts in supporting the wellbeing of its students, after being shortlisted by The Herald Education Awards.
It’s the second year in a row that the College has been a finalist in the Student Support Wellbeing category, this time for their Health & Wellbeing Initiative.
The initiative offers students access to on-campus counselling hubs, where the College works with local services to provide bespoke counselling for students to meet their needs, no matter what they are going through.
This means that students suffering from anything ranging from self-harm and suicide ideation to bereavements and childhood trauma have the barriers to the support they need removed, and get the required help on campus.
Fife College students can also access digital wellbeing platforms, targeted cost-of-living initiatives, seasonal support campaigns, as well as free gym and fitness classes, ensuring both mental and physical health are supported without the constraints of financial barriers.
The results were clear to see as there was a 60% increase in student engagement with support services, showing that learners are more confident in knowing where to turn to when they need support.
The introduction of free gym access and fitness classes has created new opportunities, supported physical health, all whilst reducing stress and improving social connection, particularly for students who would otherwise be unable to afford participation.
The achievement is made all the more impressive, given that the Student Health and Wellbeing team is made up of three roles: the Health and Wellbeing Advisor, the Fitness and Wellbeing Coordinator, and the Guidance and Wellbeing Manager.
Health and Wellbeing Advisor, Carol Hunter, said:
"This recognition means a great deal, particularly given the scale of what has been achieved by such a small team.
“This shortlisting is a testament to the dedication, creativity and resilience of the team, and to the power of partnership working within our local community to support our students to succeed."
Overall, On-Campus Health and Wellbeing Hubs have resulted in 222 students receiving vital support earlier than they would have through traditional routes. Having the hubs in a familiar surrounding, like the College, helps students reduce anxiety and remain engaged in their studies.
The Herald Education Awards: For Further and Higher Education 2026 will take place on Wednesday, May 20, at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Glasgow.
