HND Fitness, Health and Exercise students at Fife College have been developing valuable coaching experience through a successful partnership with local youth sports clubs as part of their studies.
Students delivered strength and conditioning sessions to young athletes from Central Fife ClubSport-affiliated clubs over a six-week programme, helping participants build fitness, confidence and resilience.
Members of Enigma Gymnastics, Kirkcaldy Gymnastics and FINS Swimming Club attended weekly sessions at the Fife College Kirkcaldy Campus, where students designed and delivered engaging fitness activities tailored to support the young athletes’ sporting development.
The initiative gave students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting, strengthening their coaching practice and developing skills in communication, adaptability and inclusive delivery.
Throughout the programme, students grew in confidence as coaches, adapting sessions to meet a range of individual needs and encouraging participation from young people of different ages and abilities.
The impact was also evident among the young athletes taking part, with coaches observing increased confidence, enthusiasm and self-belief as the programme progressed.
Sarah Donnelly, Sport and Fitness Lecturer at Fife College, said:
“This project has allowed students to develop their coaching skills and given them real-world experience to help them prepare for future careers in the fitness and sports industry. The initiative has also strengthened our links with the local community, creating a more authentic educational experience for the young people by bringing them into a new learning environment and taking full advantage of the sports facilities that we have at the College.”
George MacDonald, Chair of Central Fife ClubSport and one of the HND Students who took part in the project, said:
“The partnership has delivered significant value for these three clubs, and for the students, who provided an introduction to strength and conditioning exercises using different coaching styles. The young athletes thoroughly enjoyed the fresh approach from the student coaches, and on the completion of the sessions, have seen real gains and improvements in their overall strength, fitness and flexibility which has helped them develop their fitness and skills to benefit their club training and their own performances.”
