Yvonne Morrison

My name is Yvonne Morrison, and I’m a full-time lecturer in the Hair and Beauty Department at Fife College. I’ve also recently become a fully qualified trichologist.

My journey in hairdressing started right here at Fife College. I began as a full-time student in 1986, studying for two years at what was then the Kirkcaldy campus.

After college, I went into industry and worked in several salons around Dunfermline before joining Charlie Miller in Edinburgh. I spent nine years there and had the opportunity to learn from some incredibly experienced people, including Charlie himself and my manager at the time, Ian Blyth.
Those years gave me fantastic experience and opened the door to some exciting opportunities. I’ve continued to stay connected with the industry too, including being invited back recently to work on a Dior campaign. Twenty-three years ago, my career brought me back to Fife College, this time as a lecturer.

I love working with young people and being able to pass on the knowledge and experience I’ve gained throughout my career. Hairdressing is all I’ve ever done, so it’s incredibly rewarding to help the next generation develop their own skills and confidence.

More recently, I’ve been entrusted with the new Level 4 Hairdressing course. Students will develop more advanced skills in areas such as colour correction, as well as studying our new scalp specialist qualification.

Hair loss and scalp health are becoming increasingly important within the industry, so this gives students the knowledge to recognise different scalp conditions, understand some of the factors that can contribute to hair loss, and know when a client may need to be referred for specialist advice.

As a qualified trichologist, I’ll be there to support the students with that specialist knowledge and oversee cases where further advice may be needed.

The aim is for our students to leave Fife College equipped with a broader range of skills and the confidence to use them in the industry. One of the things I value most about working at Fife College is that I’ve been given the opportunity to keep developing throughout my own career.

I was able to become a Wella Colour Expert and bring that knowledge directly back into the classroom, where we use Wella products with our students. More recently, I was supported in pursuing trichology something I’d wanted to do for a long time.

For me, the timing was right, and being given the opportunity to continue learning while also sharing that knowledge with my students has been wonderful.

I started here as a hairdressing student, and now I’m helping prepare the next generation for their own careers. It feels like things have come full circle.
