Case Study: George McDonald
My name is George McDonald, and I am currently studying the HND course in Fitness, Health and Exercise.
Before coming to Fife College, I worked with Fife Council. After taking early retirement, and as the summer months began to end, I felt I needed something new to focus on. Fitness has always been a big part of my life—I’m a football referee and have also trained referees to improve their fitness levels.
I decided to come to college to add substance and formal knowledge to what I was already teaching. I wanted to back up my experience with education and qualifications, so that those I train would better understand and take on board what I’m telling them.
The course has been excellent, particularly in helping me understand the human body. It’s fascinating to learn how everything works together—the muscles, the nervous system, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and the different energy systems. It’s amazing how all these elements combine to keep you fit and performing at your best.
Many people exercise without fully understanding what’s happening inside their bodies. A key part of the course is learning about recovery, how to push yourself safely, and when not to push too hard. We also explore ways to become faster and stronger, using different training methods in the gym, in circuits, or outdoors.
One of the most rewarding aspects for me has been keeping the mind active. I’ve noticed a real difference in my ability to retain knowledge. It’s also been great learning alongside younger students. Seeing them develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them later in life is fantastic, and being part of that environment has been a very positive experience.
