Case Study: Kay Simpson
My journey with Fife College began years ago when I studied Health and Social Care. I went on to work in that field for around 10 years, but deep down I’d always wanted to pursue journalism and build a career in media.
A couple of years ago, I decided to take the leap and start this course. That was the moment I realised I could genuinely do this - that I had the talent, the passion, and the drive to make a career out of it. Applying to Fife College has honestly been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’ve loved learning about all aspects of media production, especially radio and multimedia. We get hands-on experience in the television studio, working on multi-camera productions both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. I’ve also developed skills in sound production, presenting, and camera work.
Out of everything, radio has definitely been my favourite.
My ambition is to work in video game media and journalism, that’s the main reason I came to Fife College. I’m really passionate about gaming, and through the radio projects here, I discovered how much I enjoy celebrating video game music and scores. That experience helped me realise I’ve found my niche within journalism.
One of my proudest achievements was winning the International Student Broadcasting Championship for Best Presenter. Before that, I’d entered the Student Radio Awards in the UK. Although I was nominated, I didn’t win, and I remember feeling quite disheartened.
Then one day, while I was stuck in Birmingham during a storm, completely soaked from the rain, I received an email saying I’d been nominated for the International Student Broadcasting Championship for my video game radio show. Just two weeks later, I found out I’d won. It was such an unbelievable moment and made all the hard work feel worth it.
I think one of the reasons I’ve grown so much at Fife College is because of the lecturers. They constantly encourage you to step outside your comfort zone in the best possible way. They’re incredibly supportive and really believe in your potential. I especially owe a lot of thanks to Scott for pushing me to believe in myself and develop my skills further.
For me, the best thing about Fife College is the sense of community. The lecturers are supportive, the students are kind and encouraging, and everyone is here because they’re passionate about what they want to do.
It feels very different from school. Here, you’re surrounded by people who share the same interests and ambitions, and that creates such a positive environment to learn and grow in. We all support each other, work together as a team, and celebrate each other’s successes and that’s something I absolutely love.
