From a career change to a future in Childhood Practice
After deciding it was time for a change in career, Stacey Sneddon began her journey at Fife College in 2023, starting with an SVQ in Childcare. What began as a decision to pursue her passion for working with children has since developed into a continued journey of learning and professional development.
Following the successful completion of her SVQ, Stacey progressed to a Professional Development Award (PDA) in Education Support before going on to study an HND in Childhood Practice. She is now preparing to begin the second year of her HND in September, with ambitions to progress to degree-level study in the future.
Finding a new direction
Stacey came to Fife College with a varied career background, having worked in a range of administrative roles. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a medical secretary, and it was during this time that she began to consider a change in direction.
Her experience helped her recognise her passion for working with children and inspired her to pursue a career where she could make a positive difference to children and their families through play and learning.
Since beginning her studies, college has given Stacey the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally. Her studies have encouraged her to become a more reflective practitioner, thinking critically about why she does things rather than simply following established routines.
She has also developed a strong appreciation for the importance of continuous professional development and the role that ongoing learning can play in improving practice and outcomes for children and families.
The support that made a difference
One of the most significant moments in Stacey's college journey came during her SVQ, when she was fortunate to have a tutor who encouraged and supported her throughout her studies.
His enthusiasm, guidance and belief in her abilities gave Stacey the confidence to continue her education and progress to further qualifications.
That support has stayed with her throughout her journey and helped her reach the point she is at today, preparing to begin the second year of her HND.
College has also allowed Stacey to build lasting relationships with lecturers and fellow students. Friendships formed during her studies have extended beyond the classroom, with classmates even beginning to attend a local yoga class together.
Making a difference through play
A highlight of Stacey's career so far has been the opportunity to support children and families through early intervention.
Being able to make a positive difference during the early stages of a child's development has been particularly rewarding, while supporting the whole family has reinforced for her the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers to achieve the best possible outcomes for children.
Looking ahead, Stacey hopes to use her experience to support and inspire other practitioners to recognise the true value of learning through play.
She is particularly passionate about the role play can have in developing children's speech, language and communication skills, and believes some of the richest learning opportunities can come from simple, child-led experiences rather than expensive resources or overly structured activities.
Through her own experience, she has seen the impact that small, thoughtful interactions can have on a child's confidence, learning and overall development. Her ambition is to share that knowledge with other practitioners and encourage them to recognise the value of following children's interests, creating opportunities for exploration and making the most of everyday moments of learning.
Looking to the future
Stacey's long-term ambition is to continue developing her knowledge and experience before progressing to degree-level study. Ultimately, she hopes to support practitioners to develop meaningful, play-based approaches that put children's development at the heart of practice.
Her journey from administration, through childcare qualifications and into higher education demonstrates the opportunities available to those looking to change direction, develop their skills and pursue a career they are passionate about.
Stacey's advice to future students
"My advice to anyone starting their journey would be to enjoy the learning experience and make the most of every opportunity. If you don't understand something, never be afraid to ask for help. Your tutors and lecturers are incredibly knowledgeable, approachable and genuinely want you to succeed.
"Stay in touch with them throughout your studies and even afterwards - they are an invaluable source of guidance and support. Take the time to build relationships with your classmates too. Having a network of peers who share the same interests makes such a difference.
"Most importantly, be passionate about what you do. Remember why you chose this profession. As early years practitioners, we have the privilege and responsibility of helping to shape the lives of young children during some of the most important years of their development.
"Never underestimate the impact you can have on a child's life."
