Scottish Emmy and Bafta nominated actor and Producer Dougray Scott has built a celebrated career across both film and television. Having established himself as an international acting talent, he continues to choose diverse projects and roles, garnering critical praise for his scene stealing performances.
His wonderful acting career began in Fife. Dougray is from Glenrothes, attended Auchmuty High School and he then gained a place on the full-time acting and performance course at Fife College’s Kirkcaldy Campus. During 1982-1984, his time at College gave him the foundations and inspiration he needed to progress on to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff (1984-1987) where he was awarded the RWCMD Most Promising Drama Student award.
His early work was close to home as he worked in the Scottish national theatre and Scottish television, where his early credits include: Soldier Soldier, Taggart and Lovejoy. From there his career took off. He took on multiple roles in action films including the hit action thriller ‘Hitman’ and ‘Taken 3’, in which he performed alongside Liam Neeson. He also starred alongside Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2, and Kate Winslet in the Second World War drama, Enigma.
Alongside his impressive screen career, he also has notable stage performances including Sam Mendes’ To the Green Fields Beyond at the Donmar Warehouse in 2000. Written by Nick Whitby, the production is about the First World War and set in France in 1918. Dougray starred opposite Ray Winstone and The Guardian noted that his portrayal of a ‘socialist-mystic chief … stand(s) out in a first-rate ensemble.’
Remaining close to his Scottish roots, Dougray is known to pay regular visits to his family in Fife and Perthshire and supports the Hibernian football team, along with playing golf and making regular appearances as Chieftain at the Markinch Highland Games. To further honour his Scottish roots, he has recently narrated a new three-part documentary, ‘Monster: The Mystery of Loch Ness’.
Dougray is passionate about telling Scottish stories and making them accessible to a global audience. He has partnered in a Scottish production company, Buccaneer Media, and has most recently played the lead role in Irvine Welsh’s TV drama ‘Crime’. Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh, Dougray’s character, Detective Inspector Ray Lennox, battles his own personal demons while investigating the disappearance of a schoolgirl. Critics singled out Dougray’s performance with the Guardian commenting that he “delivers a triple espresso shot performance” and the Telegraph raved that he gives “an incendiary performance (delivering) every line with a burning intensity yet manages at the same time to convey the character’s emotional fragility … Every moment he’s on screen is mesmerising.”
