A number of health and social care students have been celebrating after receiving conditional offers from UCAS for places on healthcare related degrees.
Seven students, who have all been studying either the Advanced Certificate: Pathway to HNC/D and Degree or Advanced Certificate: Pathway to University courses at the College’s Kirkcaldy Campus, have been describing their joy at getting the news that they would be starting a university course later this year.
Part of the College’s pathways programme of courses, the Advanced Certificate Pathways offers students the opportunity to study a number of Highers, usually two or three, from a variety of subjects with a view to then moving on to HNCs, HNDs, or degrees.
One of the seven, Janna Caldwell from Dunfermline, has received an offer from Edinburgh Napier University for their BM Midwifery course. Janna has been dreaming of becoming a midwife for over ten years and was ecstatic to get the news that her dream was another step closer to becoming a reality.
Janna said: “When I finally received the long-awaited email with a conditional offer, I was absolutely overwhelmed with happiness and disbelief that I had finally received an invitation to begin making that 10-year dream finally become a reality.”
Janna has put her success down to some fantastic support from her College lecturers, Tracy English and Heather Russell. Janna added: “I have loved every minute of my time at Fife College and made some amazing new friends. Our course was made easier and more enjoyable because of the support and encouragement of both my tutors, Tracy and Heather.
“I have pushed myself really hard, got my head down and focused on what I needed to do. My old charge nurse once said to me “if you can dream it then you can do it!’ Now for the next chapter!”
Charlene Slimming, who has also received an offer for Midwifery at Napier, also spoke of her delight at her offer. Charlene said: “Receiving my university offer was very emotional for me as although the actual wait was very tense, I felt as if it was something, I had waited on most of my adult life.
Charlene, who recently received a Russell Trust Scholarship through the College’s Adam Smith Foundation Scholarship Programme, added: “I was never fully convinced my dream could come true. Moving forward with friends made at college has made it all the more special!”
Another pathway student to receive an offer was Thomas McDonald. Thomas, from Windygates, had applied for Paramedic Science at Queen Margaret University.
Thomas said: “I was ecstatic as it showed that my two years of hard work had finally paid off. I couldn't contain myself and phoned my partner who works as a nurse, so I could share with her the fantastic news.
“I'm in my second successive year doing the pathway to HNC/D. After completing my first year and thoroughly enjoying returning to education, I had no reservations about returning to complete more Highers. I've meet loads of fantastic people who may be friends for life and the lecturers have always been helpful and easy to approach.”
Lecturer Tracy English said: “I am so proud of all our students who have received an offer to study at university. I know they have all worked so hard to get to where they are and I’m sure they will go on to have exciting and fulfilling careers when they complete their studies.”
“The current situation with the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the vital role that health and social care workers play in our society. I hope we see many more students following our current group’s path towards a rewarding career which supports and protects those most in need in our communities.”
