Fife College, along with businesses and organisations throughout the UK have been busy preparing for the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes in to force today (Friday 25 May).
The new regulation applies to all organisations that handle European Union citizens' data and the new rules give consumers new rights, including rights to find out what data is being held on them, and to delete that information, unless a firm or organisation has a good reason to keep it.
Consumers now have to opt-in to give their explicit consent to use personal information and firms also have to meet higher standards for keeping data safe which is great news for all of us.
Fife College has a series of policy documents available which explain how it is safeguarding and handling personal data.
Marianne Philp, Director of Governance and Compliance at Fife College, said: “The changes brought in by GDPR are a great opportunity for all businesses and organisations, including ourselves, to take a step back and review the way we do things with regards to data handling to ensure we are doing things efficiently and effectively. As a College we have worked hard over recent months to ensure we comply with the new legislation, ensuring that the data we keep on students, staff, and other partners is treated with care. This date is not so much of a deadline but the beginning of a new way of doing things which should help protect us all in our fast-paced digital world.”
