Four Fife College students have been recognised for their achievements and given a boost to their career prospects, after being awarded prestigious scholarships sponsored by Shell UK.
A special presentation event was held at the Colleges Stenton Campus in Glenrothes where the students were welcomed by Gaynor Jamieson, Trust Fundraiser for the Adam Smith Foundation, which looks after the Colleges scholarship programme.
Chantelle Murison (18), Morgan McGrory (18), Christopher Cunningham (32) and Dean Watson (19), were presented with certificates by Chris Cunningham, Maintenance Co-ordiantor at Shells Fife NGL plant in Mossmoran. Chris was delighted to attend the event to find out more about the award-winning students and answer their questions about Shell and the Oil and Gas industry.
John Paterson, Trustee and Chair of the Adam Smith Foundation was also delighted to attend along with Lecturer Liam Coakley who was proud to see his students recognised for their achievements.
Said Chris: On behalf of Shell I am delighted to present these scholarship awards. The recipients are all extremely deserving and it was great to meet them in person, find out more about their future ambitions and recognise their achievements. I also enjoyed answering their questions and sharing my knowledge and experience about the industry. I hope that the Scholarship will enable each of the award winners to benefit from wider opportunities and enhance their future career prospects.
The four students, who are studying either year one or two HND Petroleum Engineering at the Colleges Stenton Campus in Glenrothes, have shown great academic ability alongside commitment to their studies with the aim of progressing in the oil and gas industry.
Awards of 1,000, 500 and 250 were made to the students thanks to funding generously donated by Shell to this annual scholarship which was first created by the company nine years ago.
The students were delighted to be shortlisted and to receive the award from Shell which they will use to help pay for further study and training courses required for the oil and gas sector.
Nicky Inglis, Director of Engineering, Energy and Maths said: This is a fantastic achievement for Chantelle, Morgan Christopher and Dean who are all extremely deserving. Receiving this award not only provides great financial help to the students it also provides them with a welcome boost. Having a global company such as Shell on their CV will help them stand out from the crowd when securing their next step. I wish them the very best in their future studies and careers.
Chantelle, who lives in Crossgates while at College, is originally from Skye and is keeping her options open after completing an HNC last year in Engineering Systems at Inverness College. Said Chantelle: I have always been a hands-on person and so decided that, although I have the qualifications, university is not for me. I hope to secure a traineeship ideally onshore once I complete my HND. Receiving this scholarship from Shell is an amazing opportunity and proves that your hard work pays off. I feel privileged to receive this award it was great to meet Chris and it has really motivated me to keep going with my studies to achieve my career goals.
Morgan who is from Glenrothes was inspired by his Dad and family members to aim for a career in Oil and Gas. Said Morgan: My Dad, Grandad and Uncle have all worked offshore and have inspired me to do the same. The industry seems to be bouncing back so Im confident that I can secure work after my course and this scholarship will help towards that.
Christopher Cunningham, who is also from Glenrothes, was previously made redundant and so decided to gain some qualifications. Said Christopher: I was tired of zero hour contracts with no real prospects and so I decided to come to college. Its university for me after the summer and then hopefully working offshore which is my aim and dream job.
Dean who is from Leuchars also plans to continue his studies at university on completion of his course. Said Dean: This scholarship will help towards my accommodation while at university which will make a big difference to me. I know a lot of people in the industry who are doing well and I hope to do the same with this help from Shell.
